Islington’s businesses have a great record for commitment and innovation in safeguarding our environment. The Giant Green Business Awards are the council’s way of celebrating this work and giving its businesses an opportunity to see their achievements recognised.
The awards have seven categories: Natural Islington; Energy and CO2 reduction; Waste minimisation and recycling; Sustainable transport; Green engagement; Green building and Sustainable food and eating.
The ‘Natural Islington’ category may be of particular interest for those reading this blog. This category recognises and reward initiatives that enhance Islington’s biodiversity and improve the natural environment locally. This could include a range of measures such as: greening roofs or walls, creating roof gardens, food growing projects, reducing urban flooding through decreasing hard surfacing and increasing the soft landscaping of an area i.e. through planting or creating Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). Other measures could include protecting wildlife and enhancing biodiversity e.g. through increasing ‘green corridors’ through the borough to help wildlife move around, installation of nesting boxes, tree planting or encouraging colleagues or the community to get involved in conservation projects.
If you know of any businesses that have good environmental credentials please tell them about the awards. To find out more visit http://www.islington.gov.uk/Transport/GreenTravel/Giant_Green_Business_Awards/
