It’s Big Garden Birdwatch time! The world’s biggest birdwatching event takes place this weekend, 29-30 January.
You don’t have to be an expert just enthusiastic about taking part. All you need is a pen, some scrap paper (or, a printout of the RSPBs handy bird ID sheet), and an hour to spend watching the birds in your garden, in your local park or a greenspace on your housing estate on either Saturday 29, or Sunday 30 January 2011.
Then simply record the highest number of each bird species seen in your garden, or local park (not flying over) at any one time, and then visit the RSPB website to tell them what you saw. If you're not too sure what bird you've seen, try the RSPBs easy to use ID sheet or have a look at there A-Z of birds pages.
In Islington, already this week we have had a number of schools coming out to do the big schools birdwatch and have had great fun in spotting lots of different birds in there local park.
There are some great things around at the moment, I spotted a grey wagtail last week at Radnor Street gardens which was a real treat and already the blue tits have been visiting my nest box on the balcony again. I am hoping they are more successful this year!
On Saturday I will leading a big birdwatch around the Percival Estate for residents as part of the Greening Grimthorpe project and I hope many of you will to take it as an opportunity to be outdoors listening and looking at the birds found where you live, I’m sure you will be surprised by all the things you do see!
So if you can find a spare hour this weekend to sit in your garden, visit your local park or the green space on your estate try and have a go at doing the Big Garden Birdwatch.
Enjoy
