Following dedicated campaigning from our 24 young hopefuls, Islington's first ever youth councillors have now been elected.
The election results event on Friday night saw candidates and their campaign crews, along with parents and other guests, come together to hear the much anticipated results of the borough's first ever youth council election.
The youth councillors, who will help influence decisions about issues that affect young people across Islington, are: Benjamin Harrison, Chloe Bingham, Elliot Colley, Harry Tomes, Innocent Ogunmwonyi, Jasmine Martins, Miriam Owusu and Victoria Azubuike.
The ambitious eight received the most votes from their peers in the election that saw over 3,000 turn out at polling stations. After months of planning and campaigning, their excitement was clear to see at the event - which was held out the new healthy-living hub on White Lion Street - and they all thanked other young people for their support and votes.
Miriam said: "It still hasn't hit me yet. I know we'll make a great team and will make a difference."
Benjamin, who campaigned about crime and safety, and so will now have the opportunity to work alongside council officers on this area of work, said: "Young people do need a voice, so the youth council is a really good idea as it gives us the opportunity".
They are now being inducted in their new roles and you can find out more about what the youth council will do and how to get in touch here.
